60's and 70's, Scranton, PA - Talkin' bout my generation : Blue collar, hard working and friendly people - this was the Scranton I knew in the 1960s and 1970s. I grew up just a few blocks from downtown, next to railroad track. The same place my Mother's family lived since before the turn of the century. My Grandmother met Saint Francis Cabrini and was one of the first students to attend her school. After that, every member of my family attended Cabrini and all of us graduated from West Side High School. I graduated in 1971, the same year that the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18, we started using unleaded gas, troop levels in Vietnam were lowered to 200,000, Charles Manson was sentenced to death (reduced to a life sentence), "All In The Family" was new on TV and a couple of Americans drove around the Moon in a "lunar buggy". It would be an understament to say that it was a dynamic time of change in the United states. The photos are in no particular order, but grouped loosely by subject or event. James Island is a large triangular sea island, framed by Wappoo Creek and Charleston Harbor on the north, Morris Island and Folly Beach on the east, and the Stono River and Johns Island on the west. Passiflora or Passion flower (this is a hybrid “Star of Bristol” created in 1987 by John Vanderplank, UK) got it name from descriptions of it flower parts supplied by priest in “New Spain" (South America). The descriptions were interpreted in 1609 in Rome as representing various elements of the Crucifixion, five petal and five sepals (the ten disciples, minus Judas & Peter): outer fringe (the crown of thorns); five stamens (number of wounds Christ received and knob-like stigmas of the pistil (the nails). This symbolism is not universal. Introduced to Europe from South America in the Eighteenth Century. Most passiflora are vines. A Spiny Back Orb Weaver, Gasteracantha cancriformis. We had a bumper crop of Spiny Backs this summer. They are tiny and harmless but weave huge webs. I had a lot of them in my front and back yard. When I say big webs, I mean big, I had one web that was about 11 feet by 8 feet.

Magnolia. Magnolioideae of the family Magnoliaceae. It is an ancient genus (20 million years), having evolved before bees appeared as the flowers developed to attract beetles. It was named after the French botnist Pierre Magnol.
