Charleston and the Low Country. We live just across Charleston Bay on "Jim Island". James Island is a large triangular sea island, framed by Wappoo Creek and Charleston Harbor on the north, Morris Island and Folly Beach on the east, and the Stono River and Johns Island on the west. The Civil War began on James Island on the morning of April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces at Fort Johnson fired on Union-occupied Fort Sumter. All images copyright Larry Laskowski, 2003 - 2008

lastcow > Edsito State Park, SC. Dung Beetle, Geotrupes balyi. After capturing the dung, a dung beetle will roll it, following a straight line despite all obstacles. Dung beetles can roll up to 50 times their weight. The "rollers" roll and bury a dung ball either for food storage or for making a brooding ball. As in this case, two beetles, one male and one female were present during the rolling process. The male rolls the ball, with the female hitch-hiking. When a spot with soft soil is found, they stop and bury the dung ball. They will then mate underground. After the mating, both or one of them will prepare the brooding ball. When the ball is finished, the female lays eggs inside it, a form of mass provisioning. Some species do not leave after this stage, but remain to safeguard their offspring.

lastcow > Summerall Chapel at the Citadel was "erected during 1936-1937. Cruciform in design, the Chapel is a shrine of religion, of patriotism, and of remembrance. From the air the red clay tile roof forms a cross. It was designed in the spirit of 14th century Gothic. The furniture throughout is plain-sawed Appalachian Mountain white oak stained cathedral brown. The ceiling and timbering are pine. The lighting fixtures are handcrafted wrought iron throughout. Hanging from the walls are flags from the 50 states and the territories". from Citadel web site.
