Christmas Video : I grew up next to the Erie Lackawanna Railroad tracks in Scranton, PA. Just across the tracks was our play ground, a coal dump. My house was not more than 50 yards from a closed mine shaft which was in view of the Mount Pleasant breaker. Besides the daily trains carring coal, dump truck rummbled up and down Linden street just about every day. Every so often the truck would stop at our house. If I was home I would stand next to the coal chute as they loaded tons of coal into our basement for our winter fuel. I am not sure when my father put up the first Christmas train platform, but it seems that it was always a part of our Italian Polish Christmas. I've had my own train platform for Christmas at least 20 years. My platforms have always been part real memories, my imagination and traditions. Moutain paper - now painted butcher paper, coal, used dried coffee grounds for roads, mirrors for frozen lakes, lighted homes and main avenue, and so much more. Because of time and grown kids, this years platform was simplest and small, but it was still magic and it never fails to brings back such wonderful memories. Merry Christmas.

60's and 70's, Scranton, PA - Talkin' bout my generation : Blue collar, hard working and friendly people - this was the Scranton I knew in the 1960s and 1970s. I grew up just a few blocks from downtown, next to railroad track. The same place my Mother's family lived since before the turn of the century. My Grandmother met Saint Francis Cabrini and was one of the first students to attend her school for Italian children. After that, every member of my family attended Cabrini and all of us graduated from West Side High School. I graduated in 1971, the same year that the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18, we started using unleaded gas, troop levels in Vietnam were lowered to 200,000, Charles Manson was sentenced to death (reduced to a life sentence), "All In The Family" was new on TV and a couple of Americans drove around the Moon in a "lunar buggy". It would be an understament to say that it was a dynamic time of change in the United states. The photos are in no particular order, but grouped loosely by subject or event. I'll continue to add photo as time permits. Photos Copyright, L. J. Laskowski, 2008.
